Semi-evergreen / grows 10-35' ht & sp
Sweetbay Magnolia is an east coast native, particularly in the coastal areas in the southeast and north along the Atlantic coast to New York. Also called Swampbay, or Swamp Magnolia, they are often found in open woodlands, shaded woods, swamps, and along streams and ponds.
It's a good specimen tree for butterflies, hummingbirds, pollinators, small mammals, and songbirds, acting as a wildlife food source and larval host plant, especially for Swallowtail Butterflies. The solitary flowers are fragrant, showy, creamy-white, and are visible in late spring and early summer. After flowering, cone-like fruits appear and contain bright orange-red seeds.
Sweetbay magnolia prefers full sun to partial shade and does best in consistently moist to wet, acidic, and organically rich soils.
