This large, densely compacted shrub can be treated like a hedge, espalier, or even trained to be a small conical tree. Podocarpus can grow in full sun to part shade. It will grow in full shade, but does not like wet soils, prefering rich, moist and slightly acidic well-drained soils. This plant is salt tolerant, drought tolerant and displays some tolerance to heat. It is also resistant to deer. It adapts well to shearing so that it is sometimes used in topiary design, but is also great as a specimen or background plant.
